Webinar Overview:

A key component of successful export compliance programs is knowing your customers, supply chain partners, and distributors. But how can you verify the ultimate end-users and uses of the goods and technology you export? The US Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has a robust international effort to conduct end-use/end-user verifications for exports, which serves to ensure the effectiveness of the export control system and identify problematic transactions. Former BIS investigator Don Pearce shows you how to conduct your own verification checks, using what you already know, what you can find online in open-source research, and what questions to ask in a virtual end-use check. We will take a look at the importance of document review to get the most from what your clients provide, free and low-cost information sources on the web for verification of statements, using social media search techniques to get a better idea of your customers and their business, and how to get the most out of a telephone or video interview by watching for the tell-tale signs of deception.

Learning objectives:

  • You will learn to conduct a document review for end-use/end-user verification
  • How to use online data sources, geolocation assets, and social media posts to validate information and identities
  • Identifying “Red Flags” by consolidating data from multiple sources
  • What to look for in an on-site visit to confirm compliance
  • Interview strategies to substantiate information in-person or in remote or telephonic meetings
  • How to craft good questions to get the facts you need
  • The subtle hints that indicate deception in both face-to-face and virtual meetings
